Description
Another assignment for my illustration class: this time we were to create a cover for an existing book. I chose the sci-fi novel Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress (which, by the way, I highly recommend).I first painted the image with acrylics and then scanned and painted over much of it in PS CS2 to achieve the look I was going for. Yeah, I find acrylics incredibly frustrating (just when you finally get that perfect color mixed up, it starts drying, sheesh).
The with-text version is the main post, because I planned the composition with type in mind. The non-text version is linked below.

What are those white squares for? Would be better without.

Roadrunner: They're supposed to be abstracted chromosomal bands (or, umm, whatever they're called, heh), because genetics plays an important role in the novel. I've tried the image without them, as you've suggested, but I really feel they help compositionally. But thank you very much for your honest opinion. :]
